RYDER CUP COMPETITION

With the golf season started on both sides of the Atlantic our thoughts, especially here in Ireland, will soon turn to the question of which players will have the privleged experience of representing their respective continents in 8 months time.

Already Irish breaths are being collectively held as both Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke have yet to make their season debuts and are not in the top-10 of either the World Points or European Points list. Can the dream of 4 Irishmen (Clarke, Harrington, Paul McGinley and Graeme McDowell) on the European team be fulfilled?

The chase for the 10 automatic slots will be fascinating. Never has the European team been less cut and dried. Montgomerie, Garcia, Clarke, Harrington, Westwood and Donald. That's 6. Olazabal, Howell, McGinley, Casey, Poulter and Fasth. Already 12. McDowell has the added incentive to play in his own back yard. From Sweden, Stenson and the ever-popular (and experienced) Parnevik rediscovering some form, and there is bound to be an unknown Scandinavian player whose year to emerge is 2006. New stars in the making - Nick Dougherty probably leads that particular pack. And old stars desperate for one more tilt at glory - Nick & Bernhard?

And what about this scenario - Sunday 24th September 2006. U.S.A 13 1/2 - Europe 13 1/2. Final match is Woods v Bjorn. All square after 16. Thomas marches to the island tee on the 17th hole with one ball and nails it down the middle!

On the opposite side of the Atlantic the race is equally hard to call. Our American friends might say harder? Assuming that the eight U.S. players - Woods, Mickelson, Furyk, Toms, DiMarco, Perry, Love and Campbell - in the Sony Top-20 are automatic (or is DLT in danger of missing out) that leaves 2 automatic places. There are 20 more names that will probably feel they have a shout.

"All" you have to do is name the 24 players who will make up the two teams at the K-Club on September 22nd. First prize is a 4-ball at Old Head Golf Links together with one nights accommodation and dinner at Acton's Hotel in Kinsale (total value of €1,500).
