GOLF GUIDE TO IRELAND - WEST OF IRELAND
Western Ireland golf holidays are certain to be a memorable ones. The region includes counties Clare, Galway and Mayo and the spectacular scenery of the Burren and Connemara. The outstanding golf courses at Lahinch and Doonbeg are augmented by the gorgeous jewels at Carne, Connemara and Enniscrone. With excellent parkland golf at Westport, Galway Bay, Ballinrobe, Oughterard, Gort and East Clare also on the route, there are plenty of options to choose from.
In the south of the region, close to Shannon Airport, Ennis and Lahinch are the principal accommodation bases. Further north Westport and Clifden are most often chosen, although Ballina and Galway are good alternatives.
Galway is Ireland's fourth largest city. It is a vibrant city with most attractions centred on or near Eyre Square. Just two miles west is the seaside suburb of Salthill with its long promenade and wide choice of hotels and guesthouses.
Westport is a picturesque and lively tourist town with great atmosphere. There are several local attractions and scenic routes to the north (to Achill Island) and south (the Sky Road through Connemara to Clifden).
Clifden is another popular tourist centre and the small fishing village of Roundstone is just to the south.
Ballina is one of County Mayo's larger towns popular with both anglers and golfers alike. Anglers enjoy some of the best salmon fishing in Ireland on the River Moy.
In County Clare, the principal destinations are the seaside resort of Lahinch and the county town of Ennis. Travel between Lahinch/Doonbeg and County Kerry is shortened by the Shannon Estuary ferry than runs continually between Killimer (Clare) and Tarbert (Kerry). Just minutes from Shannon Airport is Dromoland Castle, a superb 5***** accommodation with its recently opened golf course claiming the fastest greens in Ireland.
