Kilkenny City is a medieval city acclaimed internationally as a centre for art and design. One of Ireland's smaller (pop. 24,000) cities it is yet one of the best. Kilkenny is dominated by the 13th century Kilkenny castle built by the Normans on their arrival. The beautifully restored St. Canice's Cathedral is in rememberance of the 6th century monk, St. Canice after whom the city is named. For golfers, Kilkenny Golf Club is a well respected championship parkland track that provides a severe test. The fine courses at Mount Juliet and Carlow are nearby. Kilkenny is an excellent base from where to explore the south east of Ireland including the city of Waterford and another medieval harbour town at Wexford. There are many fine golf courses in the southeast of Ireland. |
